More Advent Speed Bumps

Last year, I shared a list of Advent Speed Bumps – suggestions of how we might slow down and savor the season of Advent rather than race headlong into Christmas.  Here are a few new Advent Speed Bumps to consider as we eagerly await the birth of Christ.

Take a nap:  Try out the practice of “napsio divina” or sacred slumber.  Give yourself permission to sit still, close your eyes for 20 minutes, and listen for God’s still small voice in the silence.  Centering your spirit in this way can help you face the day with more peace and less panic.

Pet a puppy:  Our pets embrace the present moment with no concern for the past or future.  Take the time to pet a puppy (or cat!) and experience the unconditional love and joy that they so eagerly share.  Pray that you might love your neighbor as faithfully as your dog loves you!

Color:  Contemplative coloring is an invitation to prayer.  Pull out a coloring book, gather some colored pencils and visit with Christ as you would an old friend. Color on your own or with others.  I have been getting together with friends on Sunday evenings for a low-key Advent Coloring Circle.  We gather over coffee & tea, light Advent candles, read a small portion of the Christmas story, color in collective silence for 15 minutes, then linger and enjoy one another’s company.  A simple gathering with friends is most definitely a sacred speed bump that nourishes my soul.
