Words Matter

Words matter. The words we use with one another, with ourselves and with God set the stage for how we might have eyes to see God’s presence right in the midst of our extraordinary ordinary lives. Selecting a “sacred word” as a companion for the year to come has become an increasingly popular tradition as we transition from one calendar year to the next. For many, this practice has become associated with Epiphany (January 6) when folks receive a "star wordas a gift to carry into the coming year. Others prayerfully discern their sacred word over time using guidance from retreats such as Give Me a Word by Abby of the Arts.

I have found the practice of prayerfully discerning a sacred word to be a deeply meaningful part of the new year for me  Over the past few years I have been companioned by words such as… TRUST in the slow work of God, FALLOW, DANCE, STILL, PLAY and STRETCH. I have been prayerfully discerning what might be my word for 2023 and am still waiting for something to rise in my heart with certainty. Some of the possibilities bouncing around in my spirit are… SPEAK, BOLD and WORD. I look forward to seeing where the Spirit leads and how this word will walk with me in the year to come.

Perhaps you are seeking a sacred word as well. Whether I know you personally or not, I would be honored to pray for you and listen for what word(s) might rise in my spirit on your behalf. Simply email me with your name and the subject line of "Pray me a Word" and I will email you back with your words within the week. These words may simply be a meaningful part of a single prayer for you. However, perhaps one of the words will resonate more deeply and become a sacred companion for you in the year to come.

Words matter. You matter. May you have ears to hear God’s Word and eyes to see the Epiphany star guiding you into the year to come.
